Types of bingo

The four main types of bingo

There are many different bingo games available online as well as offline, but most of them can be placed in one of the following categories:

  • 75 ball bingo
  • 90 ball bingo
  • 80 ball bingo
  • 30 ball bingo

With these four basic categories, numerous bingo varieties are to be found. You can for instance try your luck with pattern bingo, a type of bingo where the goal isn’t to get a complete row. Instead, your aim is to mark every square of a pre-printed pattern present on the bingo card. The pattern can for instance be a butterfly or a happy face.

75 ball bingo

75 ball bingo is the most commonly played bingo variant in Canada and the United States, and virtually all bingo sites online offer 75 ball bingo. The standard bingo card for 75 ball bingo has 25 squares arranged like this:

All squares have numbers in them and you need to get a full row (horizontally, vertically or diagonally) for a bingo to occur.

It is quite common for the middle square to bee a “free” square, i.e. a square that is already marked when the game begins. When such bingo cards are used, it is possible to get a bingo after just four balls.

90 ball bingo

90 ball bingo is the most commonly played bingo form in the United Kingdom, and it is also very popular in Australia and parts of South America. The standard bingo card for 90 ball bingo consists of 27 squares but only 15 of them have numbers. The squares are outlined in a 9 x 3 pattern on the bingo card.

80 ball bingo

80 ball bingo has traditionally been played in Scandinavia and it is much less common online than 75 ball bingo and 90 ball bingo. If you want to give 80 ball bingo a try, our suggestion is you pay a visit to one of the bingo sites targeting players from Northern Europe.

The standard bingo card for 80 ball bingo is 4 x 4 card with no free square. All squares have numbers in them and you need to get a full row (horizontally, vertically or diagonally) to win. Some versions of the game will also pay out if you mark all four corners.

30 ball bingo

30 ball bingo is also known as Fast Bingo or Quick Bingo since each round tend to be over very quickly. 30 ball bingo is still very unusual online, but we will probably see an increase in the number of gambling sites within a not too distant future. After all, a quick game that can be finished in a jiffy is exactly what players will be looking for as the ability to play bingo directly in your smart phone expands. When you’re in line in the grocery store you don’t want to commit yourself to a time consuming game that may or may not be finished by the time you reach the cashier.

30 ball bingo is played with a 3 x 3 bingo card. Every square has a number in it and there are no free squares. In order to get paid you need to mark all nine squares – a simple row won’t do.
